Hockey was one of the main
attractions of the Delhi Asiad. India breezed through its pool matches, beating Malaysia
5-1, Oman 10-0 and Bangladesh 12-0.
In the semi-finals, India beat Japan 7-2, while Pakistan beat Malaysia 2-0. In the final,
played before a full house at National Stadium, and a national television audience,
Pakistan registered its biggest victory over India (7-1) to win the Asian Games hockey gold.
A fortnight later, the same Indian team beat Pakistan and came runners-up
in the Esanda Cup in Melbourne.
The Delhi Asiad also saw the inaugural women's hockey competition. India won
its only Asian Games gold in women's hockey, defeating South Korea in the final.
