The inaugural World
Cup in hockey was held at Barcelona in 1971.
Pakistan struggled in its pool matches
and were virtually out of the running. They in fact packed up to leave the hotel. But
Japan shocked Holland in the last pool match to bring Pakistan back in the running.
India, which remained unbeaten in its pool, was defeated by Pakistan in the semi-final.
India led 1-0 at half-time, but eventually lost 1-2. India finished with the bronze.
