In the Asia Cup league match against Pakistan, Sandeep scored the deflection of the tournament when he slotted in India's second goal on the stroke of half-time. The deflection off a free hit from Deepak Thakur was done blind-sided and in a flash, leaving the Pakistan keeper stunned.

Later, in the semi-final against Korea, Sandeep sneaked in behind the Korean defence, picked up a cross from Dhillon and coolly side-stepped the Korean keeper to put India on level terms. The goal paved the way for a 4-2 win, India's first in 5 years over Korea.

Sandeep Michael was the declared the Most Promising Player of the 2003 Asia Cup.
