Berlin Olympics - 1936
From 1928 through 1936, India was represented by British India's Star of India flag. August 15, 1936, when India met Germany in the Olympic hockey final, marked the unofficial debut of the Indian tirangaa in any sporting competition.

The Indian players assembled in the dressing room prior to the match, and reverently saluted the tricolour of the Indian National Congress, which their Asst. Manager had brought to Berlin.

It would be only the 1948 London Olympics when free India could officially unfurl its national flag.
