here was
tremendous excitement in India. For the first time after 1964, our national team
had won a world-level tournament.
Unprecedented crowds thronged to greet the team wherever the boys went. The players called on President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who blessed them for future victories.
The team was felicitated by the state governments and Congress party units of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The desire of many other states to greet the boys could not be fulfilled owing to shortage of time.
Even as we were doing our 'victory dance' at Kuala Lumpur, Punjab chief minister Zail Singh announced my promotion as Director of Sports, Punjab - a post that had eluded me for 13 years. Gurcharan Singh Bodhi was elevated to the rank of Deputy Director.
