I am an avid fan of the Indian national team, and I have never missed any of their matches played in Kuala Lumpur. Sometimes India plays brilliant hockey, and there are other times which are a let down .. e.g., the Commonwealth Games hockey semi-final where India lost 0-1 after attacking throughout the match!!!!

We invite you to the international Muscular Pain Tournament (men and women) to be held from September 1 - 3, 2000. The tournament venue is the Almeerse Hockey Club, about 20 km from Amsterdam, and 30 minutes by train from Schipol airport.

Around 30 teams will be participating. Last year there were 1 Belgian, 1 German and 7 English teams. The tournament will be played on 1 grass and 2 astroturf fields.

I play in a university team in Wales, UK. I was given a stick last year by a friend from Kenya. The stick was green and pink and was called Just Vampire. Another friend of mine, Anant Mathur from India, highly recommends them. It was an amazing stick though it has seen better days.

I am a big fan of Indian hockey skills. I played the game for my school, but couldn't do so at the college level as the game was not that widespread. That is the sorry state of hockey in India, our "glorious past" notwithstanding. Hope that India does well in the forthcoming tournaments.

I recently travelled to India on a hockey tour and it opened my eyes in many ways. You have an amazing amount of talent coming through your ranks which you need to embrace. Some of the skills of the players I played against in Delhi and in Punjab were of a high class, but there were other aspects like tackling and positional play which were a downfall. The umpiring was terrible by international standards, worse than any other that I have seen.

I know that many people in India are not happy with the standard of their players. If things don't change to clean up in certain areas, Indian hockey will plunge deeper in international hockey rankings. That would be unfortunate as there is so much talent which I hate seeing go to waste.

I was looking for information on Richard Allen, who was the goalkeeper for the Indian Olympic hockey team from 1928 to 1936. Richard was my father's cousin. I was a sports jounalist in India from 1983 until I migrated to Australia in 1996. I was the assistant editor of Sportsworld magazine, which was edited by Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. 

India has always been and will always be close to my heart. Though being of Anglo-Indian heritage, I am proud to say that despite the opportunity to take up citizenship in the country of my adoption, I have fiercely hung on to the pride that I carry with my Indian passport, Indian citizenship and Indianness. 

Of all the years covering numerous sporting events around the world and in India, the sport closest to my heart was hockey, Indian hockey in particular. I travelled with the Indian hockey team wherever the national team went, from 1984 to around 1990, when I got disillusioned by their performances and took to reporting on more "glamorous sports".

But deep in my heart I know that Indian hockey was closest to me. It was hockey which kick-started my career when I won the All-India Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism (sponsored by ITC) for an analysis I wrote : Hockey: Walking the Tightrope, while reporting from the Karachi Champions Trophy in 1985.

I no longer write on the sport since my job is more to do with media liaison for the Education sector in Western Australia. It was by chance that I recently got a chance to cover the four-nation hockey series in Sydney and Perth. It was while researching for this assignment that I stumbled upon your website. I am delighted that there is something like this for Indian hockey. After all, what other sport has given us so much honour and glory to our country apart from hockey.

Keep up the good work and if you want contributions from Western Australia, which is the capital of Indian hockey, I will be most willing to contribute.

I would also like to take this opportunity to send my regards to some of the hockey players and hockey writers who I befriended while writing on Indian hockey. I'm sure some of them are regular visitors to your website. I don't know where they are or what they are doing but I take this opportunity to say hi to former players like Sommaya, Joaquim Carvalho, Mohammed Shahid and Pargat Singh, and journalists like Tyagu, Jagannath Rao, Harpal Singh Bedi, Walter Fernandes (Karachi), Swami and Srimanji.

Ever since I was a child in New Delhi, I have adored hockey. I was born near the Shivaji Stadium (which used to be called Lady Harding ground). For me, the ultimate in hockey is to see India in its rightful place - on top of the world. 

India has spiralled down because of a combination of factors - mismanagement, cricket getting all the support and sponsorship, Europeans sabotaging hockey rules (including astroturf, which suits their needs). 

With the recent win in Sydney, India must seize the chance and consolidate the hockey program, give nationwide exposure to the sport and institute a professional league. We will forever have the players with the best skills, but these will go to waste unless coaching and techniques to increase team effort are made. 

Hockey is a team sport, unlike cricket. A collection of less skillful players such as in Korea or most European countries can beat India by playing in an organized manner. We will forever be hockey champions if we keep this simple point in mind

This is an awesome website and I really love reading about the Indian hockey scene. My name is Jaya Dixit. I live in Ottawa, Canada and I play on the provincial team here in Ontario. I am 17 years old and I have been playing for 3 years now.

My mother and I are planning a trip to India this coming summer (summer 2000). I was wondering if you knew of any women's hockey clubs in India where I can play hockey. 

I am very interested in developing my game and I know that India is internationally recognized as one of the top hockey powers of the world. I represented Gujarat State in the national championships in 1969 (schools), 1971, 1979 and 1980 (Cuttack). I also played and captained Gujarat University from 1969-1973, later on going to play for State Bank of India, Ahmedabad LHO.

I started playing hockey in Ahmedabad after the sudden demise of my elder brother Harish Patel at the age of 17 from a dog bite. He was an up and coming goalkeeper, and played for the Challenger Club. He was coached by Kishen Karve, very belovedly known in Ahmedabad as MAMA. My brother's departure from our family was a tremendous loss, but it inspired me to learn this game. I will always love the game of hockey.

I found this web site through the Excite search engine. I am a keen follower of all kinds of sport in India. I am really glad that India is doing well in hockey (and also tennis) other than the much publicised cricket. It is ironic that the majority of Indians do not really know what is happening in hockey despite it being the national game.

The best news is our victory in the 4-Nation tournament. I can talk about it with my colleagues in Holland and feel really glad when the Dutch admire the Indian team. Unlike cricket. Hope hockey also does not go in the same direction as cricket. I wish the team all the best at the Sydney Olympics. Try hard and the medal will be ours again!

Namaste. My name is Karan Singh and now I am in the USA. I am 13 years old. I used to play right-back for St. Dominic Savio High School, Andheri and left-in for the Bombay sub-junior hockey team.

Have you heard of Khalsa College coach Jaswant Singh Garewal? He also coached D'Assisi and Bombay hockey teams. I would like you to know that I am his grandson. 

I used to attend the BHA training sessions on Sundays at 7:15 am. It used to be very tiring, but at the end, they used to give us each a big glass of milk, a banana, an egg (for non-vegetarians) or a sandwich (for vegetarians). We used to break the egg shells on each others head. It was fun.

Will there be live coverage of the 2000 Sydney Olympics hockey matches. I want to tape every single hockey match that India plays in. India needs to get all its senior hockey players back in order to succeed.

When I was last in Bombay, the turf at the Mahindra Stadium was under repairs. Is it fully replaced yet? Does Sir Walia still teach at BHA? There used to be Sir Khan at BHA. Is he still there? Please motivate the youngsters of Bombay to play field hockey.

I saw your web site through India Abroad which is a weekly newspaper in the United States. 

I did my Pre-University at Loyola College in 1964-1965, and then did my BE at the College of Engineering, Guindy. I played for my college for three years. Coach Bhaskaran was playing for Loyola College at that time and we many of us knew that he would become very good later on!

I think India's style is the best, and if our players have the right attitude, avoid distractions, concentrate on physical fitness and the basic skills for which India is known for - then they should be able to play like the players of the 50s and 60s like the great Peter, Prithipal, Haripal, Claudius, Joginder, Balbir, Harbinder, Hamid, Inam-Ur-Rehman and so on.

Good luck and god-speed. Avoid politics and squabbles and work as a team and come to one another's help in defending or attacking! Let us see if you can be golden this time. It will mean a lot to those of us living outside India.

There is too much of politics involved in Indian hockey. Young talent from southern India is not recognised. The board of selectors is very partial towards players from northern India. I don't think anything can be done. Politics will always be the KEY FACTOR in the selection of Indian hockey players.

I just saw the India vs. Australia hockey match at the Sydney Olympics. The Indian team rocked. I am a Fijian-Indian, and was supporting the Indian team from beginning to end. They were attacking all the way, though the scoreline didn't reflect that.

I was kind of hoping for a draw, as I have been an Australian for ages, so I was happy with the end result. This game took a lot out of the Indian team; hope they can maintain this level of performance. I wish the Indian team takes home a medal, they deserve it. India should have been fighting for the gold medal, and not trying to qualify for the Champions Trophy. I am really sad that we did not make it to the semi-finals. India should have won against Poland. So what if 2 Polish defenders were marking Pillai. Is he the only player in our team?

I think we are not aggressive enough. We don't go for the kill. We just tend to take things easy. Too late now. India has to wait for 4 more years. All is over for the moment.

Now that the Indian hockey team has again failed to win a medal in the Olympics, many people in the media have lots of complaints on our team. A newspaper even mentioned "Indians are masters of the art of snatching defeat from jaws of victory." I want to ask just one question to the news media. How come you remember the hockey players only during the Olympics, while you spend the whole year covering just cricket.

I have been following Indian hockey for about 35yrs. I love Indian hockey. I still believe Indian hockey can go to the top of the world, provided our officials have a professional approach towards the game.

I watched the Indians play hockey at the Sydney Olympics. We have world class material - the only pity was that our coach was not able to use them to their potential. For example in the India vs. Korea match, the Indians were more of a defending side than attacking, there were lots of gaps between the forward line and the half line, the Indians were not using the aerial pass at all.

Another area was in penalty corners - we didn't use any innovative method at all. Penalty corner shots were very ordinary and repetitive. There was poor rolling substitution. Pillai was under-utilised, due to the fact that our mid-field did not function at all. For some reason, Ramandeep was not steady in any of the matches.

On the positive side, our goalkeeping was excellent, our defence was good, Pillai can play for another couple of years, till the 2002 World Cup. We should utilise him more effectively. He is a legendary figure in Indian hockey, like what Tendulkar is to Indian cricket.

I was a hockey player during my school days and always had great interest in the matches that India played in. It is sad to see that we played brilliantly till that last 20 min of the last match against Poland. I am happy to say that one of my seniors in school represented India in the recent Sydney Olympics.
