I am a very great fan of Indian Field Hockey and appreciate websites like this one. One of
my two Hotel Taj Mahal locations is in Montreal, Quebec. I coach an Indian Field Hockey
Team for children aged 10-15. I have also attended many of the professional Field Hockey
Games such as the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. I am also planning a trip to Australia to
witness a few matches. I try to support our nation's Field Hockey Team as much as
possible.

I have played for my school, college, state (Junior) as left full back and left half
back. My father, Shri Shiv Kumar Varma is one of the organizers of the Jawaharlal Nehru
Hockey Tournament in New Delhi - India's premier domestic hockey tournament.
My grandfather, the late Shri Fakir Chand Verma was a member of first Indian Army Hockey team that toured New Zealand and Australia in 1928. Other members of that team were the legendary Dhayan Chand and Roop Singh.

I found this site through the Excite search engine. It is a great site but perhaps not
updated with latest info. In time, maybe that is what needs to be done for the site.
India has vast talent, old and young, but lack coordination. India should retain 75% old players to instill confidence in the younger players and improve on speed and accuracy in scoring goals - field goals or short corner / penalty stroke goals.
The same is true of cricket, where despite vast talent we still lack the winning touch.

The politicians in charge of the IHF treat our Indian boys like Dhanraj, Ashish and Mukesh

I'm a passionate hockey fan and am really upset with the dropping of Dhanraj Pillay,
Mukesh Kumar, Sabu Varkey and Ashish Ballal from the Indian team, for petty ego reasons of
Mr. K.P. S. Gill. This shows the sorry state of affairs and arrogance of the man at the
cost of losing world class players who make us Indians proud. The IHF always nutures
talent only to later sack the very players on the pretext of age, just when they reach
their prime and are ready to perform, another example being former striker Jagbir Singh.
Presently no new forward in India can match the above three players in terms of speed, skill or goal scoring ability, though Gagan Ajit Singh and Rajneesh Mishra are promissing for the future. If not a good foriegn coach, I hope Cedric D'Souza or Balkishan Singh come back to coach India.

Being a hockey player, I thought I'll browse through your pages and give my comments.
As rightly said by some media personnel, Indian hockey has hit rock bottom. The only way it can come up is by inviting foreign coaches. The reason why I prefer foreign coaches is because their approach is radically different. The ideas they have, though they seem simple, are very effective when used (I noticed all this during my recent visit to Holland).
The IHF should share the funds they get from sponsorship with the players. They should start an All India Hockey League, instead of the nationals.

plays. I thought that all countries had grown up. It has ruined some very fine teams.

Greetings from Germany. This is a most interesting homepage. On various tournaments I
admired the technical skills of many Indian hockey players.
Historically seen, Indian teams have played matches on our club ground in 1930/1931 (on a snow covered ground!), 1932 (the Olympic winners team) and 1966 (against GDR). So why not again! Our club organises a field hockey tournament in August 2000 (medium skill level, natural lawn). Details may be found on our website.

The objective of this web site seems to be half-hearted. The contents do not suggest
or help any plans or means of improving the QUALITY of the sport.
Field Hockey today is ASTRO hockey, and with astro-turf being unaffordable, the think tank has done nothting to find a cheaper subsitute. I have ideas and suggestions, in case anyone is interested. Also people should be ready to ride over petty politics to seriously improve things.
