Friendship with 'Babu' | Babu was vice-captain of the 1948 Olympic team and captain of the 1952 Olympic team. India won the gold in both those Olympics. Dhyan Chand developed a special friendship with Babu. Both Babu and Dhyan Chand exchanged many letters in Hindi. In their letters, they discussed great players, events, matches, state of affairs of Indian hockey, and also shared a number of jokes. |

hyan Chand developed a special friendship with Kunwar Digvijay Singh, known popularly as K. D. Singh 'Babu'. A great hockey player, he was the vice-captain of the 1948 London Olympic team and captain of the 1952 Helsinki Olympic team. India won the gold medal in both those Olympics. Babu was also given the Helms Award in 1952 as the best amateur sportsman in the world.
Both Babu and Dhyan Chand exchanged many letters in Hindi. In their letters, they discussed great players, events, matches, state of affairs of Indian hockey, and also shared a number of jokes.
Once Dhyan Chand and Babu had come back from a fishing trip. While the fish was being prepared, they talked about what they would leave in financial terms for their children. They decided that when one of them died, the other would publish the letters.
At the time of Babu's tragic death, he was working on a book on the greats of Indian hockey, with many chapters on Dhyan Chand. Unfortunately, the book was never published.
